Microbial fuel cells work by harnessing the electron-releasing capability of certain types of bacteria widely found in soil and mud. Paul and Michka have <a href=\"https:\/\/libarynth.org\/michka\/research\/microbial_fuel_cells\/cardiff5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">started working together <\/a>on Microbial Fuel Cells, commonly known as <span style=\"color: #755f53;\"><strong>Mud Batteries<\/strong><\/span>, in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2007\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zprod.org\/zwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/barryMudMap.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.zprod.org\/zwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/barryMudMap.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.zprod.org\/zwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/barryMudMap-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.zprod.org\/zwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/barryMudMap-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.zprod.org\/zwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/barryMudMap-1024x576.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Their batteries contain sediment mud from Barry Island, Wales. Our bacteria worked hard and slow, 12 mud batteries powering 2 small robots for 10 seconds every 10 minutes.
